Tane Davis (above) has been a drama tutor for the past 6 years, and has just joined the Theatre Company with a role in CATS.  He is the tutor for the 12 - 16 year olds on Wednesdays, from 5.15 to 6.45pm.

2007 was a great year for Junior Theatre and 2008 will continue to provide it with wonderful opportunities.  Many of our junior theatre members have the opportunity to be involved in the shows Whangarei Theatre company produces each year.  Others take part in other theatrical opportunities in Northland, such as the speech competitions.

Many Junior Theatre members have gone on to move onward and upwards, both in the theatre disciplines, as well as using their theatre skills to move ahead in other areas and careers. Taking part in Whangarei Theatre Company's Junior Theatre program is a great way for budding thespians to develop the skills needed to progress into  Whangarei Theatre Company's larger shows, as well as learn theatre etiquette and general theatre protocols.

Last year we focused on elements and techniques in theatre; the singing voice in term 1, Speech, and staging a play for competition which incorporated historical costume and dance, in terms 2 and 3, while term four saw a focus on  improvisation, script writing, interpretation, and use of props.

This year we are exploring the different theatre styles from a series of one-act scripts.  The plays will demonstrate varying acting styles, and Tane's aim is to encourage the children to explore their skills and then re-interpret the plays.  Later in the term they will be encouraged to write their own play scripts.  Particular aspects of tutoring will be breathing, voice projection and stage presence - all essential in developing confidence as a performer.

If anyone would like to come and help with the running of the junior theatre, please contact Tane on 021 033 9395.
