What You Need To Know...

Rehearsals

Initially will be from 6.45-9.00pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 1-5pm on Sundays.  Later on, the evening rehearsals will probably run on longer and the Sunday one start at 10am.

For the first couple of weeks rehearsals will focus on the music, and then dance rehearsals will commence.

Rehearsals will intensify closer to opening night and extra ones may be necessary. Schedules will be provided in advance with as much detail as possible.

Please read all the information below to see what you need to do to prepare for your audition.

Auditions 

These are by appointment between 6 and 9pm on Tuesday 11 and Thursday 13 August and 1and 4.30pm on Sunday 16 August at the theatre in Reyburn House Lane, Whangarei.  Contact the Production Manager (ian.page@btinternet.com) or text (021998839) to book your appointment.  Given the short notice if you are unable to attend any of these sessions please contact Ian who will try to arrange an alternative for you.

 

​Call-backs

These will be on Tuesday 18 August from 6 - 9pm. Please keep this evening free or inform Ian if you wouldn’t be available if required.

All auditionees must be at least 15 years old, and will need to:

1. perform a simple dance routine

2. sing

3. demonstrate their ability to speak. 

 

Please ensure that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your audition time to check in etc. 

You will perform the dance routine first in groups of 4, and then sing/speak as individuals.  Overall you can anticipate the process taking up to one hour.

and you should practice this in preparation for your audition.   We ask that women wear heels or chorus shoes, and men wear dress shoes rather than soft-soled shoes.

All auditionees will be required to perform a song that showcases their vocal ability. Those auditioning for a lead role are encouraged to sing a song from Grease that is appropriate for the character they are seeking. You are welcome to use Bluetooth or other technology to provide your backing track.

CAST

DANNY ZUKO 

Male. The leader of the Burger Palace Boys; good-looking, strong and confident, with an air of easy-going charm.

​

SANDY DUMBROWSKI

Female. New girl in town; sweet, wholesome, naive, cute, and innocent.

 

BETTY RIZZO

Female. Leader of the Pink Ladies; tough, sarcastic and outspoken but vulnerable.

 

FRENCHY

Female. A dreamer; good-natured but not too smart, she is heavily made up, fussy about her appearance, particularly her hair. She can't wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician.

 

MARTY

Female. The 'beauty' of the Pink Ladies; pretty and looks older than the other girls but betrays her real age when she opens her mouth. She tries to act sophisticated.

 

JAN

Female. Funny, loud, compulsive eater and awkward member of the Pink Ladies. Loud and pushy with the girls, but shy with boys.

 

DOODY

Male. The youngest of the guys; small, boyish and open, with a disarming smile and a hero worshipping attitude towards the other guys. He also plays the guitar.

 

KENICKIE

Male. The second in command of the Burger Palace Boys; tough-looking, tattooed, surly and avoids any show of softness. He has an offbeat sense of humour.

 

SONNY LATIERRI

Male. A member of the Burger Palace Boys; funny Italian-American, he is a braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he's a real lady-killer.

 

ROGER

Male. The anything-for-a-laugh stocky type of boy; a clown who enjoys winding people up, he is full of mischief and is always dreaming up half-baked schemes and ideas.

 

VINCE FONTAINE

Male.  A typical 'teen audience' disc jockey; slick, egotistical and fast-talking. He is also a veteran 'Greaser.'

 

CHA-CHA, aka CHARLENE DIGREGORIO

Female. The best dancer at St. Bernadette's; a loudmouth, she wins the dancing competition with Danny.

 

EUGENE FLORCZYK

Male. The class valedictorian; physically awkward, with weak eyes and a high-pitched voice. He's a typical 'apple-polisher' - both smug and pompous, but gullible.

 

JOHNNY CASINO

Male. All-American, rock-star “greaser” student at Rydell High, whose real name is Clarence.

 

MISS LYNCH

Female. A no-nonsense, serious, loud, English teacher.

 

PATTY SIMCOX

Female. A typical cheerleader; attractive, athletic, sure-of-herself, but can be given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm. She's a bit of a pain and unpopular with the Pink Ladies, and can twirl a baton.

 

TEEN ANGEL

Male. Frenchy's suave and slick guardian angel, who encourages her to stay in school.

 

THE PINK LADIES

Ensemble. The club-jacketed, gum-chewing, hip-swinging girls' gang who hang around with the Burger Palace Boys.

 

THE BURGER PALACE BOYS

Ensemble.  A super-cool, hard-looking group of wheeler-dealers... or so they think.

AUDITION TIPS...

On the day 

• Arrive well in advance so that you can take time to warm up and fill out any forms.

​​

• We need to see how well you can match pitch. You may sound great on your own, but you also need to sound great with others and, therefore, you may be required to sing with someone else at some time during the audition process.

• All auditionees will be required to perform a song that showcases their vocal ability. Those auditioning for a lead role are encouraged to sing a song from Grease that is appropriate for the character they are seeking. You are welcome to use Bluetooth or other technology to provide your backing track.

• Please note that you may not be asked to perform your entire song. If the audition panel stops you before the end, this is simply to allow time for all candidates and should not be taken as a reflection of your performance.

• During the audition, the Music Director and Vocal Coach may also assess your vocal range. To ensure you perform at your best, we recommend warming up your voice before your audition.

• Applicants seeking a principal role will also be asked to complete a reading to demonstrate your acting abilities.

• The first block of auditions allows the creative team to see who they want to call back for further assessment and dancing/singing.  If you do not get asked to attend the call-back session it does not mean you will not be cast – simply that the creative team have seen and heard what they need to make a decision.

General 

• Check the show’s rehearsal and production schedule – be quite certain you are available throughout. If you have conflicts, put them on your audition sheet.

• Don’t worry about nerves – everyone gets nervous at auditions, even the old pros, and having a few butterflies can actually be a good thing. But it is best to avoid worrying excessively about messing up or about what the audition panel might think of you. If you do happen to mess up, don’t get upset or walk off. Just keep on going until you’ve finished

• Dress comfortably! Avoid costumes but don’t dress completely out of character either. Avoid big clunky shoes or jewellery that may impede your movements. Choose clothing that is simple and comfortable.

• Warm up for your vocal musical audition. We want to hear your best voice. Take some time before you come into the audition to warm up your voice. The creative team must be able to hear and understand you, so project your voice and enunciate well.

IMPORTANT: Your participation in this production requires a huge commitment in both time and professionalism in order to ensure a production of the highest possible quality. Therefore, please do not audition if you are not in a position to commit fully to the rehearsal and performance schedule.  While talent is the primary consideration when casting, your level of commitment will also be a consideration and final choices for the principal and ensemble roles will be made with this in mind.
